Colorado MTB State Championships • Fangdango • Castle Rock, Colorado

Congratulations to Joe Glass and Tyler Remlinger, who each claimed Colorado State Championship titles at last weekend’s Fangdango MTB Championships.

Set on a 6‑mile, 652‑foot‑per‑lap course carved into the rugged terrain surrounding the Phillip Miller Activity Complex, Fangdango delivered a classic Colorado XC experience: punchy climbs, sharp switchbacks, fast, flowy single‑track, and technical descents that demanded both fitness and finesse. With excellent spectating and sweeping Front Range views, the atmosphere matched the intensity on course.

    State Championship Titles

In the Cat 1 Masters 40–49 field, Joe Glass rode a commanding race to secure the state title. In the Cat 1 Men 19–29 category, Tyler Remlinger delivered an equally dominant performance, taking the win against a deep and competitive field.

Both riders showcased exceptional consistency, race‑day execution, and technical skill across Fangdango’s demanding terrain—earning well‑deserved state champion honors.

Colorado State Road Race Championship • Boulder, Colorado • April 26, 2026

COS Racing athletes showcased resilience, teamwork, and championship‑level commitment at the Colorado State Road Race Championship Boulder‑Roubaix. Conditions delivered classic Roubaix character: cool, damp air, soft gravel, and—by the time later fields reached the line—freezing rain in the final miles. Most categories saw substantial fields of 30–40 riders, with aggressive, animated racing throughout.

    Team Results

In the MM 45+ 4 State Championship, Erik Hartel delivered a standout performance. On the final lap, he launched a well‑timed move on a moderate climb with roughly ten miles remaining, joining a late breakaway that held to the finish. His tactical execution earned him a 6th‑place result in one of the day’s most competitive fields. Graham Thompson was also highly active, keeping the pace high and animating the race with a series of well‑timed attacks. Dean Carlson pushed through deteriorating conditions to secure a solid finish.

In the MM 35+ 4 race, Cory “Tommy” Martin rode a consistent two‑lap effort to finish at what he described as a disappointing 11th, posting a fastest lap of 1:27:13.

Rich Heitman represented the team in the MM 65+ category, completing a gritty single‑lap effort for 21st.  This was Heitman's first ever road race.  In the MW 45+ field, Erica Otero powered to an impressive 5th‑place finish with a steady and controlled ride.

    Teamwork and Sportsmanship

COS Racing riders demonstrated strong teamwork across categories especially in MM 45+. In addition to animated racing at the front, athletes supported one another through challenging conditions, soft gravel sectors, and the freezing rain that greeted later finishers. The team’s cohesion and commitment were evident throughout the day.

    Rider Category Place Fastest Lap
    Erik Hartel MM 45+ 4 6 1:22:14
    Graham Thompson MM 45+ 4 15 1:23:30
    Dean Carlson MM 45+ 4 25 1:35:03

    Rich Heitman MM 65+ 21 1:55:08
    Erica Otero MW 45+ 5 1:51:06

    Course Overview

Boulder‑Roubaix once again delivered its signature mix of gravel, pavement, rolling terrain, and unpredictable spring weather. The combination of soft roads, sharp climbs, and deteriorating conditions in the final miles created a selective race that rewarded tactical awareness and resilience.

COS Racing extends congratulations to all participants and appreciation to the event organizers for another well‑run edition of the Colorado State Road Race Championship.

    40‑Mile Bike Race • Lyons, Colorado • February 1, 2026

COS Racing Masters delivered a strong set of performances at the 2026 Old Man Winter Rally in Lyons, Colorado. Despite the event’s winter branding, conditions were unusually mild for early February, with bluebird skies, warm temperatures, and minimal wind— creating optimal conditions for fast racing. Many riders noted that the day felt more like “Old Man Spring” than winter.

    J. Erik Hartel led the team with an excellent ride, joining the early front selection and ultimately finishing in the second group on the road. Hartel placed 27th overall out of 656 men with a time of 1:46:21, earning 4th place in the men’s 50–59 age group. His finishing group included the top women’s competitors, including Olympian Gwen Jorgensen.

Pueblo, CO – October 11, 2025 – Twenty-one COS Racing riders made a powerful showing at this year’s sold-out edition of Grassroots Gravel in Pueblo, CO. With riders competing across all three major distances—39, 75, and 113 miles— COS Racing secured multiple overall and age group wins, including three age-group victories and one overall win in the 39-mile race, as well as an additional five top-3 age-group finishes.

In the 39-mile “Lil Chile” race, COS Racing brought serious firepower to the start line, with nine men and two women tackling the fast, punchy course. Veteran rider Aaron Sudduth defended his 2024 title with a dramatic finish, executing a perfectly timed bike throw in the final sprint to edge out his closest rival and claim first place overall among more than 425 competitors. This marks Sudduth’s second consecutive win at Grassroots Gravel and extends COS Racing’s streak of overall victories on this course since 2023. This was also Sudduth’s fifth short-course gravel victory in 2025.

The men’s squad showed remarkable depth, placing six additional riders in the top 16: Roman Pena (7th), Justin Jewell (11th), then Pete Galeotti (12th) and Mike Rucker (13th), and Mike Elmer (14th), and Matt Wright (16th). Elmer and Pena also landed on the age-group podium with second and third, respectively, while Wright and Jewell both cracked the top-five in their categories. Terry Lott and Morgan Chapman rounded out the men’s field with solid finishes in the top half of the pack.

In the women’s race, Charlotte Miller and Erica Otero rode a smart, steady race in a field of 183 competitors. Miller secured a decisive age-group win in the Female 70+ category, while Otero shaved more than 30 minutes off her previous time on this course—thanks in part to collaborative pacing with Miller throughout the day. Their teamwork and tenacity exemplified COS Racing’s ethos of mutual support and performance at every level.

In the 75-mile event—dubbed “The Half”—COS Racing fielded seven riders, including longtime team coach and mentor Daniel Matheny (Matheny Endurance). Daniel sailed to a 7th-place finish out of 241 competitors, securing second in the Men’s 40+ category.  Teammate Glen Larson crossed the line 40th overall, earning second in Men’s 60+. Paul Arlinghaus delivered a solid ride for 57th overall, while George York followed close behind in 74th overall and 8th in AG. Dean Carlson and Chris Ferguson pushed through to finish 101st and 105th, respectively, with Scott Cadwallader rounding out the squad in 137th overall. Across the board, COS Racing showed depth, consistency, and grit on a course that demanded all three.

In the 113-mile “Full” course, COS Racing’s endurance specialists delivered strong performances across a grueling day in the saddle. Chad Matteson led the squad with a 16th-place overall finish, earning second in the Men’s 50+ category. Seth Hurley followed close behind in 20th overall, placing 7th in his age group, while Rick Maghanoy rounded out the trio with a solid 35th overall and 8th in AG. The team’s consistency and resilience over the long miles reflected both preparation and grit—hallmarks of COS Racing’s approach to ultra-distance gravel.

Grassroots Gravel marked the final gravel event of COS Racing’s 2025 season, closing out a year of hard-fought miles, podium finishes, and team camaraderie. With the dust settled in Pueblo, the squad now turns its focus to winter training and the upcoming 2026 gravel calendar. First up: the Old Man Winter Rally in Lyons, CO, kicking off in early February. COS Racing is already gearing up for another season of grit, strategy, and community-driven racing across Colorado’s toughest terrain.

The COS Racing Track Squad delivered an electrifying performance at the 2025 Rocky Mountain State Games/Colorado State Track Championships, breaking records and earning a slew of medals. Our local riders showcased their talent and determination, setting the stage for an exciting run at the upcoming US Masters National Track Championships.

Leading the charge was 74-year-old Charlotte Miller, a former Master's World and multiple-time US National Champion. Miller shattered her own World Record in the Flying 200m Time Trial, posting an astonishing 13.681 seconds, proving age is no barrier to greatness.

In the women’s events, rising star Andrea Villaroman blazed to a US National Record in the 1000m Time Trial with a time of 1:12.135, clinching the Rocky Mountain State Games/Colorado State Championship Gold Medal. Hot on her heels was COS Racing teammate and 2024 Colorado State Champion Nao Nozawa, who earned the Silver Medal with a time just shy of the previous record.

Due to a mechanical failure of the electronic starting gate during the competition, neither Miller's nor Villaroman's records were eligible for the record books, but they demonstrate that these ladies are ready to set them again at August's Championships.

Villaroman and Nozawa joined forces with Melissa Landworthy—competing together for the first time—to secure the Silver Medal in the Team Sprint. They faced stiff competition from the powerhouse Atomic Racing trio of World and US National Champions Wagner, Jones-Martin, and Viselli, who smashed the US National Record by over two seconds.

On the men’s side, 39-time state cycling champion Terry Lott claimed the Silver Medal in the Master’s Men’s 40+ 500m Time Trial, finishing behind former Master’s World Champion Kenneth Todd. Club member Steve Vela rallied to a 4th place finish in that deep field.  Lott also teamed up with COS Racing’s Stephen Anderson and Brian Neiport—another first-time trio—to take a respectable 4th place in the Men’s Team Sprint.

Charlotte Miller added a 5th-place finish in the Women’s 40+ 2000m Time Trial, rounding out a strong showing for the squad.

This impressive haul of medals and records signals a bright future as COS Racing prepares for the 2025 US Masters National Track Championships, set to take place August 6-10 at the recently reopened Colorado Springs Velodrome. This premier event, hosted by USA Cycling, will feature top masters and para-cycling athletes from across the country competing for the coveted Stars and Stripes jersey. Expect intense competition in events like the Sprint, Time Trial, and Points Race, with COS Racing’s home-track advantage fueling their drive for national titles. Registration for the championships closes July 30, 2025, at 11:59 PM MT, so fans and supporters can look forward to cheering on our local stars as they vie for glory.

With this momentum, COS Racing is poised for even greater achievements. Go COS Racing!

Colorado Springs, CO – May 11, 2025—The roar of the wheels and the focused intensity of competition returned to the Colorado Springs Velodrome on April 11th as the COS Racing team participated in the first sprint night of the season, which not only featured quality racing but also resulted in a world-record-beating time. Three determined riders, Laith Abbas, Andrea Villaroman, and the seasoned Charlotte Miller, represented the local squad. The team also benefited from crucial trackside support and encouragement from Chris Murphy and Erica Otero.

By Charlotte Miller, with Google Gemini Assist

The evening's events kicked off with the flying 200-meter time trials, a solo burst of speed that sets the stage for the sprint competitions. Laith Abbas powered through the timed effort, clocking in at 12.12 seconds. While his sights were set on breaking the 12-second barrier, his time provided a solid foundation for the night's racing. For Andrea Villaroman, this event marked her inaugural competitive attempt at the flying 200 meters, and she delivered a promising 12.65-second performance, signaling a promising sprinting future.

Adding to the excitement, veteran COS Racing member Charlotte Miller, drawing on her extensive track experience, delivered an exceptional time trial performance. Clocking in at a blistering 13.83 seconds, Charlotte remarkably surpassed the current world record of 13.911 seconds for women in the 70-74 age category! This incredible feat set a high bar for the evening's competition.

The action then transitioned to the tactical battles of the round-robin sprint matches. Riders were strategically grouped into quartets based on their qualifying times, ensuring tightly fought, wheel-to-wheel racing. Laith Abbas navigated his group with skill, ultimately securing a strong third-place finish. His decisive final sprint saw him execute a powerful acceleration, creating a gap that his opponent couldn't close.

Andrea Villaroman continued to impress in the sprint rounds, demonstrating a keen ability to learn and adapt her racing tactics. She showcased impressive efforts to come around her competitors in the crucial final turn, powering to strong finishes down the velodrome's home straight. Her final sprint of the night was a particularly hard-fought battle, resulting in a close second-place finish in her group.

However, the cooler temperatures of the evening appeared to hinder Charlotte Miller's performance in the sprint rounds. Despite her earlier record-breaking time trial, she struggled to find her rhythm in the head-to-head races, unfortunately losing her matches. Despite this setback, her earlier achievement and competitive spirit suggest a stronger showing in warmer conditions later in the season at their home track.

Overall, the first sprint night at the Colorado Springs Velodrome proved to be a successful outing for the COS Racing team. With personal bests, near misses, and a potential world record, the event provided an exciting glimpse into the team's potential as the velodrome season unfolds.

Fruita, CO – May 3, 2025 – Four determined athletes representing COS Racing – Brian McCall, Dennis Patton, Pete Galeotti, and Matt Wright – recently tackled the demanding 18 Hours of Fruita mountain bike race at Highline State Park, northwest of Fruita. Facing a challenging course and a deep field of competition, the team emerged with a commendable fourth-place finish out of 24 teams.

The endurance event commenced at midnight on Saturday, May 3rd, and continued until 6:00 PM that evening. It tested the limits of both rider and machine against the unique desert landscape. The approximately 7-mile circuit, which snaked around a picturesque lake, presented riders with a relentless series of twists and turns, compounded by significant sections of energy-sapping loose sand. The abrasive environment proved particularly challenging for bike drivetrains.

To conquer the extended race, COS Racing implemented a strategic rider rotation. The initial plan involved each rider completing two laps before transitioning to a "one lap on, three laps off" system. The team later agreed that this approach proved crucial for maximizing rest and recovery throughout the grueling event, especially given the stark temperature fluctuations of the desert, from chilly overnight lows to sweltering daytime heat.

Despite the demanding conditions, team morale remained high. The  camaraderie and mutual support amongst McCall, Patton, Galeotti, and Wright fueled their efforts throughout the long hours on the saddle. By the race's midpoint, the COS Racing squad had positioned itself in a strong fourth place, steadily gaining ground on the third-place team. However, a late-emerging competitor briefly disrupted their momentum. Undeterred, the COS Racing riders rallied, demonstrating resilience and determination to reclaim their fourth-place position in the highly competitive field ultimately.

Beyond the on-course action, the event fostered a strong sense of community, with participants enjoying excellent camping facilities and camaraderie. The 18 Hours of Fruita's diverse range of racing categories has sparked enthusiasm within the COS Racing ranks for future participation. Speculation is already mounting about the possibility of multiple COS Racing teams, and perhaps even solo riders, taking on the challenge in the coming years.

Local enthusiasts are encouraged to check out photos and videos capturing the COS Racing team's impressive performance and their triumphant conquest of the challenging 18 Hours of Fruita course. This strong showing underscores the dedication and skill within the COS Racing community.

Lyons, Colorado—2 February 2025. This weekend marked the 10th edition of the Old Man Winter Rally (OMW), and COS Racing delivered several standout performances. Nine riders competed across all three distances—75 miles, 40 miles, and 23 miles. The riders demonstrated skill and determination on a challenging course split evenly between gravel and road. Impressively, all COS Racing participants finished in the top 15% or better.

Among them, Boudewijn Van Werven shone brightly, securing 13th place overall out of 763 riders with an impressive finishing time of 1:51:31 in the 40-mile event, while Seth Hurley and Joe Glass took 18th and 22nd, respectively, from a field of 170 riders in the 75-mile race.  In the 40-miler, Bouw wisely positioned himself at the front of the race from the gun leading the peloton into the first of many gravel sectors on this fast and challenging route.  Cory 'Tommy' Martin, also a strong contender and first-time gravel racer, finished in a remarkable 32nd place with a highly respectable time of 1:59:50.9.

Among our Masters riders, George York led the team by finishing in 36th place with a time of 2:01:47.3. J. Erik Hartel, another Masters racer, claimed 43rd place overall with a final time of 2:03:35.7 despite experiencing multiple mechanical issues during the race.

Dennis Patton achieved a solid performance, finishing in 64th place and concluding the race in 2:06:39.8. Finally, new talent Tyler Remlinger, age 19, rounded out the team's notable finishes in 77th place with a finish time of 2:09:46.7.

In the 23 mile race and never to be overlooked, teammate Cindi Brothers finished 20th in the 23-mile race, competing against a field of 83 riders. This was her 5th consecutive OMW finish.

These solid performances reflect the dedication and resilience of the COS Racing athletes, who faced heavy winds, mechanicals, and intense competition. Known for its challenging rolling terrain and unpredictable weather, the OMW race pushes each rider to their limits. As the first race of Colorado's cycling calendar, COS Racing set a high bar for upcoming events in 2025.
